Woman With Flu-Like Symptoms Triggers Ebola Scare in Nassau

Woman was determined to not have the deadly virus.

A woman who recently traveled to Africa exhibited flu-like symptoms Friday evening in Franklin Square, causing county and state health officials to investigate it as a possible Ebola case before determining the woman did not have the deadly virus.

Nassau police say the scare began when a 911 call was placed from Franklin Immediate Medical Care, located at 30 Franklin Avenue, for an ambulance to transport a 29-year-old woman with flu-like symptoms at about 5:45 p.m.

During a physician’s examination of the patient it was determined that she had recently traveled to Africa, police said. The physician and Nassau County Medical Control then initiated protocol measures for a possible Ebola case, police said.

Medical professionals at the scene, as well as the Nassau County Department of Health and the New York State Department of Health, determined that the woman did not travel to any areas in Africa where Ebola cases have been diagnosed, police said.

The woman was deemed a non-Ebola risk case and was transported to an area hospital for normal medical treatment of flu-like symptoms, police said.
