67-Year-Old Called 911 To Say She Was Trapped In Deadly Early Morning House Fire

A 70-year-old man was able to escape the flames, but the home was "fully engulfed" when rescuers arrived at the scene.

SHAWANGUNK, NY — A tragic house fire has taken the life of an Ulster County woman, according to officials.

The Ulster County Sheriff's Office is investigating the deadly house fire in the Town of Shawangunk.

At approximately 9:45 a.m. on Monday, Ulster County 911 received a call from the home on Plains Road in Wallkill reporting a fire. The caller, a 67-year-old woman, told dispatchers that she was trapped inside the home. A second occupant, a 70-year-old man, was able to escape from the home. When the first police and fire units arrive at the scene, the house was fully engulfed.

The woman who had called for help was quickly extracted through a window, but had suffered apparent burns from the fire.

Both victims were rushed to St. Luke's Hospital in Orange County, where the woman later died. The man was eventually transferred to Westchester Medical Center for advanced care, where he is in stable condition, according to officials.

The names of those involved are being withheld pending notification to next of kin, police said. The cause and origin of the fire is being investigated by the Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit.

The sheriff's office was assisted at the scene by the Town of Shawangunk Police Department, New York State Police, Wallkill Fire Department, Modena Fire Department, Gardiner Fire Department, Plattekill Fire Department, Shawangunk Valley Fire Department, Walker Valley Fire Department, Wallkill Ambulance, New Paltz Rescue Squad, Ambulnz and the Ulster County Department of Emergency Services.
