The New Rochelle Police Department is still investigating the crash, which claimed the lives of 37-year-old Troy Carter, of Hempstead, and his 7-year-old son when their car slammed into a retaining wall near the Hutchinson River Parkway. Carmello's twin brother Romello and 11-year-old sister Tiara were critically injured in the crash.

Carmello Carter is survived by his twin brother and two other siblings, 11-year-old Tiara Carter, who was also seriously injured in the crash, and older brother Donovan, who was not involved in the crash, according to the fundraising campaign.

The twins were students at Landing Elementary School in Glen Cove. Carmello Carter loved to play sports and was on the Glen Cove junior softball team and soccer team, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser, which had brought in nearly $42,000 as of early Tuesday evening for the family of the victims.

"To know him is to love him, he was a very loving, caring, polite, energetic, fearless, amazing little boy," Edwards wrote. "He will forever be loved and missed. I truly believe he is no longer with us because God needed him for something better."

A GoFundMe campaign has also been organized in memory of Troy and Carmello Carter, by Troy Carter's mother.

The proceeds from each fundraiser will be used to help pay for funeral costs, hospital bills and other expenses incurred, according to a GoFundMe spokesperson.
