Alum, Former Police Captain To Head Iona Campus Safety

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A recently retired police captain has been chosen to head campus safety at Iona College. Adrian Navarrete recently retired as a captain from the New Rochelle Police Department captain. He was named director of campus safety at Iona College, returning to his alma mater after serving 20 years with NRPD.

"We are delighted to welcome Mr. Navarrete back to Iona," said Denise Hopkins, vice provost for Student Life. "Iona has always been a safe and caring community and we look forward to the contributions Mr. Navarrete will bring. His deep familiarity with both Iona and New Rochelle will benefit both communities as we continue to enhance the welfare of our students and strengthen our connection to the city."

After joining the New Rochelle police force in January 1998, Navarrete served in various roles including patrol officer, Critical Incident Unit officer and police trainer/instructor with the Training Unit. He was elevated to the rank of sergeant in July 2011, where he served as a patrol supervisor. Two years later, Navarrete was named a lieutenant during which time he became an assistant tour commander and training director. In December 2015, he became captain and was the commanding officer of the Police Services Division.

During his time with the New Rochelle Police Department, Navarrete earned several awards including the Police Commissioner Award, Cop of the Month, Class C Citations and a Commendation Award.

Navarrete earned a bachelor's degree in computer science at Iona College and participated in the Police Executive Research Forum at the Senior Management Institute for Police in 2016.

"I am very happy to return to my alma mater," said Navarrete. "Iona provided me with a strong educational foundation and gave me the tools to go on to a very productive career. I look forward to bringing my years of experience to the campus and to ensuring the safety and well-being of all the students."
