NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Westchester drivers and pedestrians will need to plan around a summer closure at the Centre Avenue bridge over I-95.

The New York State Thruway Authority announced the bridge will temporarily close to traffic on Monday, June 29, in order for crews to repair the 68-year-old structure.

The bridge will close to both vehicles and pedestrians at approximately 9 p.m. on June 29, and reopen no later than Tuesday, Sept. 1, according to the Thruway Authority.

About 3,400 vehicles use the bridge each day.

The work is part of an $86.7 million pavement improvement project on a nearly five-mile stretch of I-95, also known as the New England Thruway, in Westchester County. According to the Thruway Authority, the project began in April 2025 and includes highway repairs and work on 12 bridges in both directions between Pelham Manor and Mamaroneck.

At Centre Avenue, crews are scheduled to work during daytime and nighttime hours. According to the Thruway Authority, the job will include partial demolition work, joint reconstruction, bearing work, concrete substructure repairs, new sidewalks and new pavement. The bridge will also be slightly raised to provide additional vertical clearance over the highway.

Night work will require overnight lane closures on I-95, according to the Thruway Authority. The shoulders below Centre Avenue, at milepost 5.39, will also be closed so bridge jacking equipment can be staged.

Drivers are being directed to posted detours during the closure. Eastbound traffic should use Warren Street, Union Avenue, Memorial Highway and Huguenot Street. Westbound traffic should use Memorial Highway, Division Street, Union Avenue and Warren Street. Pedestrians should use Warren Street, Union Avenue, Memorial Highway and Huguenot Street in both directions.

Variable message signs will be lit in the area to alert the public to the closure, according to the Thruway Authority. All work is weather-dependent and subject to change.

The agency said additional bridge work in the larger project includes the Chatsworth Avenue bridge in Larchmont, and the bridge over the highway serving Metro-North Railroad's Larchmont station. Six other bridges on I-95 will be resurfaced. DeFoe Corp. of Mount Vernon is the contractor on the project following a competitive bidding process.
