Ceremony Held to Start Construction of 28-Story Mixed-Use Building in Downtown New Rochelle

The building will contain 280 rental units, 28 of which will be affordable housing.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Ground was figuratively broken Wednesday for a mixed-use building in downtown New Rochelle that will have housing, an arts and culture component and commercial space.

RXR Realty, Brause Realty and ABS Partners Real Estate joined Mayor Noam Bramson and other city officials to mark the beginning of construction for 587 Main Street, a 28-story building containing 280 rental units, 10,000 square feet of arts and culture space, 17,000 square feet of commercial space and 234 on-site parking spaces.

Instead of shoveling dirt, the groundbreaking ceremony consisted of participants sledgehammering part of a wall.

Bramson said the development plan and process for the building was adopted in December 2015.

“Today’s groundbreaking is an important step toward fulfilling our vision for a thriving city where residents and visitors of every kind can find a place to shop, a place to work, a place to meet or a place to live,” he said.

Scott Rechler, chairman and CEO of RXR, said he was proud to be launching the next phase in New Rochelle’s evolution.

“We are confident that, with this plan, New Rochelle is well-positioned to be one of Westchester’s premier economic engines, serving as a center for job generation, unique retail and dining establishments, office space for new and established businesses, new arts and cultural institutions and first-class quality affordable housing options for young professionals, empty nesters and others,” he said.

In connection with the project, the developers have agreed to preserve the original theater’s historic Main Street facade and create a new marquee that will recall the building’s Loew’s Theater history.

Officials said that leasing is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2018.
