Child Injured By Falling Tree While Trick-Or-Treating

New Rochelle city officials said it had repeatedly been in contact with Con Edison about the tree.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A child who was trick-or-treating in New Rochelle Thursday was injured when a tree fell because of the heavy winds tearing through the region. New Rochelle police said the 9-year-old was struck by a tree around 6:30 p.m. on Maywood Road.

She was trapped until someone who lived nearby pulled her out from under it, the Journal News reported.

The child was taken to the hospital with fractures.

New Rochelle City Manager Charles Strome III said in a statement that the city sends its "heartfelt concern" to the injured child and her family, as well as others in the area who were impacted by the night's tragic incident.

"When a tree is in close proximity to electrical wires, the city cannot take any action until Con Edison first removes the top of the tree," he said.

Since September, the city has been in regular contact with the power company to repeatedly urge it to address the tree at 4 Maywood Road, adding that this work received all required city permits months ago, Strome said.

"New Rochelle's Department of Public Works reiterated this request as recently as yesterday," he said.

"Con Edison's catastrophic failure to address these conditions in a timely fashion should lead to a fundamental re-evaluation of the utility's entire process for ensuring safety around trees in urgent need of maintenance," Strome said.
