YONKERS, NY — Saying that New York City Mayor Eric Adams is pushing "his migrant problem on to Yonkers," mayoral candidate and Yonkers City Council member Anthony Merante is calling on Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano to take "forceful action" against Adams's plan to place asylum-seeking families in a Westchester hotel.

"Without giving any notice of his intentions Adams decided to ship his migrants to Yonkers with no coordination with the City," Merante said in a fiery statement released this weekend. "This is a complete outrage! Adams was given one billion dollars by New York State to resolve his problem and he dumps it on Yonkers with no long-term plan or statement on the numbers of migrants coming or how long they will be staying. There are way too many inconsistencies in what is being leaked out of Adams office."

Merante, a Republican who announced his intention to run against Spano in the upcoming election, is calling on his opponent to use all the legal tools at his disposal to block Adams's plans, including following the lead of Rockland County officials in filing for injunctions and even targeting the property where the migrants are due to be housed.

"As the Coucilmember in District 6 where the Ramada is located, I’m urging Mayor Spano to take forceful action and file a lawsuit to seek an injunction against the Ramada based on City code and certificate of occupancy violations," Merante said. "The hotel is permitted for temporary shelter not permanent housing. Furthermore, these new arrivals must be identified, this is a security issue. We must know who they are and their whereabouts to protect our community."
