ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — After declaring a State of Emergency Saturday in response to New York City's decision to house hundreds of asylum seekers temporarily in Rockland and Orange counties, County Executive Ed Day announced a joint news conference with federal, state and local politicians scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday.

The State of Emergency proclamation says, in part, "This State of Emergency prohibits other municipalities from bringing and housing people in the County and prohibits hotels and motels from housing immigrants without a license and requires any municipalities that might bring migrating or asylum-seeking people into Rockland County to ensure they will be fully cared for and paid for."

It will remain in effect for 30 days at which time it may be extended, Day said.

Rep. Mike Lawler, State Senator Bill Weber, Assemblyman John McGowan and Orangetown Supervisor Teresa Kenny are expected to join Day at the news conference.

"While I have long agreed with Mayor Adams about the need for more federal aid to accommodate the migrant crisis in New York City, I am fundamentally opposed to shifting that crisis to other communities that are not prepared to handle that influx," Lawler said in a news release that blamed the country's immigration problems on the current administration.

Rockland County Conservative Party Chairman Sam Naemit released a statement in response as well:

The immigration crises created by the Biden administration has negatively impacted our community. Three hundred and forty migrants are expected to be bused to Orangetown, Rockland County from New York City on Monday May 8, 2023. This is unacceptable and unsustainable. Rockland county is not a sanctuary county and we do not have the infrastructure and resources in place to care for the migrants. I am calling on Mayor Adams to immediately refrain from busing migrants to Rockland County.
