Cowan, a journalist and historian, tells the remarkable story of Deborah Sampson, a woman who disguised herself as a man, fought in the American Army during the Revolutionary War, received an honorable discharge upon discovery of her true identity, and years later fought a successful battle to obtain a military pension for her service.
