It's still a little rough around the edges but more of Glen Island Park is officially open to the public.
In recent days, a section of the Westchester County park just north of the concession area, which had been off limits to the public since Superstorm Sandy, was reopened. A barricade of picnic tables and yellow caution tape was taken down.
Peter Tartaglia, deputy commissioner of Westchester County Parks, said Glen Island really took a beating from the hurricane.
"There was a lot of damage," he said, "and the entire park was submerged for several days."
Tartaglia said crews have been replacing park benches, trash receptacles and chain link fencing, as well as adding to top soil and beach sand ever since the storm swept through.
A section of walkway which had been moved by the force of the water was repaved.
"We officially opened Memorial Day," he said, "and the push was to get everything quickly and safely done."
Tartaglia hastened to say that neither Glen Island Park nor Playland, which sustained heavy damage, is 100 percent finished.
"Considering where we were in both parks just a few months ago, we've come a long way," he said.
