Hudson Valley City Among The 50 Best To Live: Report

There was only one city in New York that made the list.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — What are “America’s 50 Best Cities to Live”? We won’t go through all of them here because only one city in New York made that list compiled by USA Today and content partner 24/7 Wall Street. And as the song goes, it’s only “Forty-five Minutes from Broadway.”

New Rochelle, the Queen City on the Sound, made the cut coming in at No. 50, according to the report. (For more information on this and other neighborhood stories, subscribe to Patch to receive daily newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

Among the city’s virtues are 19.4 percent of commuters using public transportation — that is nearly four times the national share — and remember the song, it’s really close to Manhattan where the high-paying jobs are.

The average New Rochelle household earns $75,757 annually — $18,000 more than the typical American household.

Quality of life helped put New Rochelle in the running, too, 24/7 Wall Street said. There are about one park and five golf courses per 100,000 residents in the city.

All of the city’s benefits are well known to the mayor who was born and raised in New Rochelle.

“It’s gratifying that USA Today has acknowledged what residents of New Rochelle already know: we live in a terrific community,” said Mayor Noam Bramson.

24/7 Wall St. looked at about 590 cities in the U.S. that had populations more than 65,000 in 2016. New Rochelle’s population is 79,558.

The categories used in the study were crime, demography, economy, education, environment, health, housing infrastructure and leisure.
