NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Huguenot Academy is finally home and ready to help its students spread their wings to soar near and far.

The City School District of New Rochelle announced that NYS has approved the opening of Huguenot Academy, the district's alternative high school, at its new 140 Huguenot St. location on Friday. The Huguenot Academy was previously located next to the library at New Rochelle High School. The new location's lease extends through June 30, 2023.

“We finally have the home of our own that our students so richly deserve,” Huguenot Academy Director Andrea Schwach said. “I am so proud of our resilient students for managing a difficult year since being displaced by COVID and then Hurricane Ida. Huguenot is a unique learning space where our relationships and interactions are key to our students’ success. This move will help us to finish the year on a positive note.”

The new, 16,500-sq.-ft. space, which was approved by the Board of Education in October 2021, will both serve the CSDNR alternative high school's current enrollment of 61 students and allow enough space to expand the program in the future. There will be space designated for core classes, physical education, study hall space, a cafeteria and a multi-purpose room. Students will also be able to earn college credits through the district's partnership with Monroe College.

"Finding the right home for Huguenot Academy has been a priority since I arrived in New Rochelle," Superintendent Jonathan Raymond said. "We are happy to open up new opportunities for our students that will set them on a path to college or career success, and we are thankful to be able to deepen our partnership with Monroe College."

The new location on the Monroe College comes with more access to programs offered by the college.

"We are so excited to partner with Huguenot Academy and look forward to offering programs that will help the students," Monroe College President Marc Jerome said.

Huguenot Academy students who had district-provided bus transportation to the former location will continue to have transportation to the new location. Meals will be provided on campus.
