HV Weather: Severe Thunderstorms, Hazardous Weather Outlook

Power outages and downed trees could happen. Here's what's expected.

At the close of a week that featured if not actual rain and thunderstorms, then at least the threat of them, Friday brings what could be the worst weather of the week. The National Weather Service has issued hazardous weather outlooks for the Hudson Valley for Friday.

The storms in the forecast for Friday afternoon into Friday night have a low chance for damaging winds, large hail and flash flooding from thunderstorms for Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties.

For Columbia, Dutchess and Ulster counties, the hazardous weather outlook said there is a marginal to slight risk for severe thunderstorms for Friday afternoon and evening.

Damaging wind gusts and hail 1 inch in diameter or greater would be the primary threats from these scattered thunderstorms in the northern part of the mid-Hudson Valley.

There is also marginal to slight risk for excessive rainfall Friday afternoon and evening. Some lines of slow-moving thunderstorms could produce highly localized nuisance flooding, mainly in urban and poor drainage areas and low spots in hilly terrain. If the threat for more widespread flooding increases, a flash flood watch may be issued later Friday.
