Local Organizations Help With Meals For New Rochelle Students
There are more than 2,800 students are dependent of the school system for meals and their schools are closed for two weeks.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — With three of the city's schools ordered by the state to close, the New Rochelle school district said that local community organizations have stepped up to help with the food shortage experienced by some students during the two-week shut down due to the state-mandated new coronavirus containment area in the northern part of the city. More than 2,800 students are dependent of the school system for meals, district officials said.
The affected schools New Rochelle High School, Albert Leonard Middle School and William B. Ward Elementary School.

"As we await support from the state government to help provide these students with food support, we are very thankful to local organizations who have steeped up in this critical time," Superintendent Dr. Laura Feijóo said.
The New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority said it would be distributing breakfast and lunch beginning Wednesday for children in the Bracey Apartments, even to school-age children who attend other schools in the district whose parents chose to keep them at home.

Westcop said it would be providing packed to-go breakfast and lunch to be distributed from the New Rochelle Community Action Partnership at the MLK Center at 95 Lincoln Avenue.
The situation comes in the wake of the announcement that the state imposed a 1-mile radius containment area in New Rochelle to help hinder the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Young Israel of New Rochelle synagogue was used as the center point of the zone, because a congregant of the house of worship — a 50-year-old New Rochelle man — was the second person in the state to test positive for the virus
The majority of positive cases in the state are connected to the man, his family and others in the immediate area.
