Make a Meal at New Rochelle's Grand Market

Scallops, Swiss chard and a white wine made a recent meal.

One of the advantages of having the Grand Market on Saturdays in New Rochelle is the variety of foods that are available.

As Ralph DiBart, the executive director of the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District, said, "You can get the ingredients for an entire meal in one place."

My most recent trip to the market proved that point.

I was armed with a container that employed an ice pack that keeps things chilled, so naturally I headed straight for Gaby's Red Coral Seafood & Co., owned by Gabriela Zavala of Hampton Bay.

She hit the 1 pound mark exactly after I asked for the sea scallops.

"How about that?" Zavala said.

With sauteed scallops in a butter-wine reduction with capers leading the menu, I headed to Migliorelli Farm's booth to select a vegetable. The red Swiss chard looked appealing, so I decided to saute it in olive oil with onion and balsamic vinegar.

Now I needed something to drink with the meal.

Fortunately, AOC Fine Wines was giving out samples of New York State wines, particularly Brimstone Hill. I chose a slightly sweet 2012 Cayuga White.

I wonder what next Saturday's meal is going to be.

The Grand Market is located on Library Green, at the intersection of Lawton and Huguenot streets. It is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
