Man Accused Of Strangling Mom Now Faces Murder Charge

After arraignment on the new charge, the New Rochelle man was sent to jail without bail.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The New Rochelle man who was accused of trying to strangle his mother is now facing a murder charge. Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino Jr. said Daniel Flores Arteaga, 25, of New Rochelle, was arraigned Thursday on second-degree murder, a felony.

Arteaga's mother died March 26 after being taken off life support.

He appeared in Westchester County City Court Emergency Part before Judge Jared Rice via a video conference arraignment.

Arteaga was remanded without bail to next appear in court April 27.

Police said, around 1:30 p.m. March 17, officers responded to a home on Second Street in New Rochelle for a call about a son attacking his mother.

Arteaga was found at the residence, with his badly injured mother unconscious on the floor, police said.

Authorities said Arteaga subsequently told them he had strangled his mother until she passed out.

The woman was rushed to the hospital where put on life support, police said.

Arteaga was initially charged with second-degree attempted murder, a felony.

The video conference arraignment was conducted as part of this week’s experimental procedures under Virtual Courtroom Protocols via Administrative Order, which go fully into effect Monday.
