Manhole Explodes in New Rochelle

The incident occurred this morning at about 8:15 a.m.

A manhole on Harrison Street in New Rochelle exploded early Thursday, causing the evacuation of nearby apartment buildings.

No injuries were reported in the blast, which occurred near the Stop and Shop at about 8:15 a.m. New Rochelle fire personnel, who are stationed across the street from where the blast occurred were on the scene immediately.

Crews from Con Edison also responded, according to News 12 Westchester.

“The whole building shook when we were trying to figure out what it was,” Fire Chief Robert Benz told News 12, adding that flames could be seen shooting out of the manhole.
