Native American Spirituality: Honoring the Creatures of the Water

with Evan Pritchard, Professor of Native American Studies

Saturday, February 20

1:00-3:00pm (Workshop #1)
After setting down a basic Medicine Wheel marking the four directions, Evan Pritchard will talk about the importance of the fish, and of the Cetaceans (whales, porpoises, dolphins, etc), the shell fish, eels, snakes, and the sacred Manta Rays. He will describe the unique place of honor each sea creature holds on the great Medicine Wheel of life, and how water connects us to the Great Mother and to Her heart. He will also share traditional stories about the fish and other sea creatures, and mention some of the dangers these creatures face today.

3:30-5:30pm (Workshop #2)
In the second part of the workshop, Evan will lead a tobacco offering ceremony in which we name over a hundred species of sea creatures and place down tobacco for them (making a small mountain of tobacco which we will later offer directly to Mother Earth through her four elements) thanking them and blessing them and praying for their wellbeing, while singing songs, including traditional ones and songs we make up for ourselves in the moment. Please bring a drum and some tobacco.

Single Workshop #1 or #2: $35 (Member); $40 (Non-Member)
