NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The county has chosen a new site for Family Court in New Rochelle. The Board of Legislators Monday approved a lease for the new location, which will be a 35,000-square-foot space on two floors of a yet-to-be-constructed building at 26 Garden St. — a short distance from the New Rochelle Transit Center.

The court is expected to move into the new facility in 2021.

The current location on North Avenue is no longer viable, according to a county spokesman, and the county has been working for some time to find a suitable new location.

Legislator Terry Clements, a Democrat who represents New Rochelle, Pelham and Pelham Manor for District 11, said she was pleased the site is right by the transit hub and is convenient and accessible.

"This has been a long process, but the outcome is an example of how county and local government and community members, working together, can achieve solutions that benefit everyone," she said.

New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson congratulated the county's leadership.

"With easy access to mass transit and close proximity to population centers, the new Family Court will be in the best position to serve the residents of our region effectively," he said.

The Family Court handles matters such as adoption, child custody, guardianship and paternity, as well as cases of child abuse and neglect and cases of domestic violence. County officials said it's a court that does important work to protect vulnerable children and families, and having local courthouses is a major help to families who might otherwise have to travel great distances to make court appearances.

There are three family court locations in Westchester — Yonkers, White Plains and New Rochelle — each handling caseloads from different regions.
