New Farmers Market to Open in New Rochelle

Saturday is opening day for the new New Rochelle Grand Market.

Bring your appetite and shopping bags to Library Green in New Rochelle Saturday when the New Rochelle Downtown Grand Market opens for business.

"I call it a farmers market on steroids," said Ralph DiBart, executive director of the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District.

"Right now we have 24 vendors, with major farm vendors, fresh fish, baked French bread, mozzarella cheese and fresh flowers," he said.

The Grand Market will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 26.

Also each week there will be an al fresco dining court featuring one of New Rochelle's downtown restaurants. First up will be Alvin and Friends. They will be selling Pulled Pork Sliders and Catfish Sliders and Mango Iced Tea and Lemonade, as well as Alvin Clayton’s Spice Mix and Hot Sauce.

DiBart said there will be entertainment each week at 11 a.m. provided by the BID Family Days. There will also be arts and crafts and cooking demonstrations.
New York State wines will be offered in tastings each week.

"You will be able to get a small tasting and then be able to buy a bottle to take home for that night's dinner," DiBart said.

He said he couldn't be more thrilled at the response to the market by people wanting to be a part of it.

Moving it to Saturday was the key, DiBart said, allowing more New Rochelle residents to take advantage of everything that will be offered.

"It will be a great place to see and meet your neighbors on a weekly basis," he said.

The Grand Market is sponsored by the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District, Monroe College and Green Mountain Energy.
