New Rochelle Schools Open for First Time in Week

New Rochelle children went back to school today after having been off for an entire week. 

School officials report there were no problems getting the day started. The last two schools without power—Davis and Barnard—had electricity restored over the weekend.

The Red Cross shelter continues to operate at Albert Leonard Middle School. Red Cross spokeswoman Caroline Sherwin said 50 people were being housed there Sunday night. She said there is adequate security so that the school population and the shelter population will not be allowed to mingle.

Here is the statement released Monday by Superintendent Richard Organisciak:

I am pleased to report that on our first day back to school following the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, things appear to be running smoothly.

Despite difficult road conditions in some areas of the city, all bus pickups and drop-offs this morning were successful and without incident.

Please continue to exercise caution, particularly on streets where stoplights are still broken.

All of our schools have power restored and are fully operational with meals, technology and full instruction. All after-school activities will go on as planned.

Please be reminded that tomorrow, Tuesday, November 6th is now a full day of instruction for students. Voting will take place at the usual locations and security measures will be implemented at our schools to monitor the flow of voters in and out of the buildings.
