New Rochelle Schools Open for Some Students
For many students, the first day was a half day. All students will be in classes Monday, Sept. 9.
It is a short week for many New Rochelle public school students and a non-school week for the rest.
Schools had students coming back from summer vacation Wednesday, with kindergarten through fifth grade on a half-day schedule and only ninth grade students reporting to New Rochelle High School.
Both Albert Leonard and Isaac E. Young middle schools had all three grade levels report for classes.
Schools and district offices will be closed Thursday and Friday for Rosh Hashanah.
Superintendent Richard Organisciak, who just announced this will be his last year as head of the district, said in a note to parents that he and his staff had been preparing exciting and challenging educational experiences for the 2013-14 year.
"In return, we ask that you ensure your child's regular attendance," he said. "Your child's success in school depends on having a solid educational foundation, one that only can be achieved with regular school attendance."
Organisciak also urged parents and guardians to be involved with their child's school throughout the year.
"Let's work together to make this the best year ever in the academic life of your child." he said.
