New Rochelle Students Celebrate Arbor Day
Students at Jefferson Elementary School helped plant a tree Friday.
Jefferson Elementary School students in New Rochelle helped plant a tree Friday as part of an Arbor Day celebration.
Ken Almstead, the CEO of Almstead Tree and Shrub Care, said his company supplied the red sunset maple, and Arborist Dan Dalton guided the students through the process.
Almstead said the tree replaced two maple trees that were not healthy and had to be removed about a year ago.

He said the red sunset maple was a fast-growing tree compared to other maples and the students could expect to see 8 to 10 inches of growth every year.
Before the planting, Dalton gave the students some information on why it was important to replace trees and emphasized that trees supply fruit, oxygen and shade. Students were rewarded with a blue spruce seedling that they could take home and plant.
