New Rochelle Teen Enters Plea In High School Stabbing

After the stabbing, the 15-year-old left the state.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The New Rochelle teen accused of stabbing another high school student in January has pleaded guilty to first-degree assault, a felony. Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino Jr. said Bryan Stamps, 15, of New Rochelle, entered the plea in Westchester County Court Thursday.

Stamps was sent to Woodfield Cottage, a detention center for juvenile offenders, in Valhalla. He is scheduled to appear for sentencing Jan. 24, 2019.

Scarpino said Stamps will be sentenced to one to three years in state prison.

On Jan. 18, 2018, Stamps stabbed another student inside New Rochelle High School. The student was taken to a hospital trauma unit, where he underwent surgery and was treated for serious injuries. police said.

After the stabbing, Stamps fled New York.

He was found by the FBI after nearly four months in Alabama and was taken into custody May 14.

Stamps waived extradition to New York two days later.

Westchester County Police Warrants Squad picked him up in Alabama and returned him to Westchester.

He was indicted by a grand jury April 16.

The stabbing to which Stamps pleaded guilty came a week after the fatal stabbing of Valaree Schwab, 16, allegedly by fellow student Z'inah Brown, 17, in the Dunkin' Donuts on North Avenue near the high school campus. Brown was charged with second-degree murder.
