New Rochelle YMCA to Offer After-School Programs

After-school programs boost school attendance and academic performance.

The New Rochelle YMCA is offering an after-school program to school-aged children at Webster and Davis Elementary Schools as well as at the YMCA—with pickup from Jefferson Elementary.

CEO Julie Gallanty said extending learning opportunities is essential to increasing a child's success in school.

"YMCA after-school programs promote a love for learning, social and emotional development, healthy choices, character and creativity," she said, "and provide children with an extra support system through positive role models to help them achieve and reach their full potential."

Gallanty said 25 percent of school children in New York are left alone and responsible for taking care of themselves.

The program at the YMCA encourages parents and caregivers to make certain children are involved in safe, educational experiences after school. Studies also show that participation in after-school programs helps boost school attendance and academic performance and reduces gaps in academic achievement among children from disadvantaged households.
