New Rochelle's Grand Market opened to the public Saturday at Library Green and was well attended, with people buying fresh produce, sampling wines and tasting what the city has to offer.
Councilman Ivar Hyden had been advocating having a farmers market in New Rochelle on Saturdays for many years. For him, it was a dream come true.
"It feels absolutely wonderful," he said. "We have a park full of vendors.
"A market on a Saturday will enable people who live downtown or anywhere in the city to come and shop with us," Hyden said.
The market's hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 26.
Each week one of New Rochelle's downtown restaurants will be featured. First up was Alvin and Friends. They sold Pulled Pork Sliders and Catfish Sliders and Mango Iced Tea and Lemonade, as well as Alvin Clayton’s Spice Mix and Hot Sauce. For Saturday, June 8, Coromandel Indian Cuisine will be featured.
The BID Family Days provided entertainment 11 a.m. provided by the BID Family Days.
The Grand Market is sponsored by the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District, Monroe College and Green Mountain Energy.
