YONKERS, NY — Police say that thanks to a little help from the community, they were able to foil an opportunistic thief's plans to take what wan't his from the front steps of a Yonkers home.

Police said Francisco Jose Eder Mateo's camouflaged jacket (part of a unique outfit) actually helped them spot the suspect a short time later.

When officers tried to stop the Bronx man, he led them on a brief foot chase. Police say the 27-year-old thought he was getting away, until he was stopped in his tracks by a Yonkers public works employee who saw him running from the officers.

The video shows the good Samaritan, who had just jumped out of his car, knocking Eder Mateo to the ground, where the closely pursuing officers quickly apprehend him.

"This video shows what happens when everyone works together seamlessly to stop crime," police officials said in a statement, accompanying the footage released on social media. "A resident sees a crime and quickly calls it in allowing Officers to get on the scene quickly, Officers flood the area to ensure the suspect can’t get away despite his attempted fleeing, finished off by a Good Samaritan who saw an opportunity to help our Officers capture a suspect and took that opportunity- right to him."

Eder Mateo was charged with felony grand larceny and felony criminal possession of stolen property, along with other misdemeanors. At his arraignment, he was released on his own recognizance.

Police officials said this cautionary tale should serve as a warning to any would-be package privateers.

"To any future thieves planning to commit these crimes in Yonkers — pick somewhere else," officials said. "Our residents, Officers, and City employees will not stand by and allow you to victimize people in this City. You will be apprehended and delivered to the court system to answer for your actions."
