Post Super Bowl Driving Alert: Snow, Sleet, Checkpoints

State Police will increase patrols in Putnam, Rockland and Westchester to tackle DWIs after Super Bowl and as the storm begins.

New York State Police will have increased patrols statewide to tackle DWIs after the Super Bowl—just a couple hours after the snow-sleet-and-ice storm is supposed to hit.

Winter Storm Linus is expected to blanket Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties with snow, ice and rain on Sunday after 7 p.m., making evening and overnight travel difficult and affecting the Monday morning commute.

In addition to normal patrols, extra troopers will be deployed across the state Sunday and Monday. Called STOP-DWI, the annual campaign led to nearly 100 impaired-driving arrests during the same weekend in 2014.

In addition to increased patrols, the campaign also includes the establishment of sobriety checkpoints around the region.

“The injuries and deaths caused by impaired drivers are completely preventable,” said State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D’Amico in a statement. “State Police and our law enforcement partners continue to work to keep drunk drivers off our roads every day. Those celebrating the big game this weekend should do so safely- plan ahead or drive sober. Together, we can save lives and prevent serious injuries.”

The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Warnings, saying a “significant” storm could possibly dump 10 to 14 inches in Putnam, 6-12 inches in Rockland and northern Westchester, and 4-8 inches in southern Westchester.

The storm warning remains in effect from Sunday evening at 7 p.m.—right after kick-off—through Monday afternoon at 6 p.m. There is the potential for one-tenth to one-quarter inch of ice, according to the National Weather Service.

There will be hazardous travel conditions on Sunday night and Monday. Monday morning’s commute may be particularly difficult, the NWS said.

This Super Bowl weekend effort is part of a larger program of DWI enforcement in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which is coordinated by state police and the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration.
