Report Ranks Most Dangerous Southern Westchester Communities

New Rochelle was ranked the 23rd most dangerous in the state, but it was still below what the FBI says is average, according to the report.

Five southern Westchester communities were ranked among the top 64 most dangerous in New York State, according to data compiled by Law Street.

New Rochelle (23rd), Port Chester (25th), White Plains (32nd), Greenburgh (43rd) and Harrison (62nd) ranked among the top in New York for violent crimes, said the report.

New Rochelle ranked first among those communities with 231.98 violent crimes per 100,000 people. Port Chester was next with 228.4 crimes per 100,000 people.

Law Street ranked cities with populations above 25,000 and their crime stats from 2012. The report pulled together data from the FBI on occurrences of violent crimes, murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Read their full report here.

All of the five towns, while they made the state rankings, are below the FBI’s calculations for an average rate. The average violent crime rate for a city of 25,000-49,999 people is 300, according to the report.

New York State was ranked the 19th most dangerous in the country with an average of 406.8 violent crimes per 100,000 people.

Here are the number of violent crimes per 100,000 people for the five communities listed above:

New Rochelle: 231.98

Port Chester: 228.4

White Plains: 159.81

Greenburgh: 112.88

Harrison: 39.98
