NFL Player Charged With Rape In Atlanta

Adam Gotsis played for Georgia Tech in 2013, when a woman claims he took her home after a party and sexually assaulted her.

ATLANTA, GA — A player for the NFL's Denver Broncos has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman in Atlanta in 2013, when he played football at Georgia Tech.

Adam Gotsis, a defensive end with the Broncos, was booked into Fulton County Jail last Wednesday, March 7, on a felony rape charge. He was released on a $50,000 bond. Jail records list his address as Lone Tree, Colorado — a suburb south of Denver.

Gotsis, who is 6-4 and weighs 287 pounds, is accused of overpowering and sexually assaulting a 25-year-old woman on March 9, 2013. The woman, now 30, reported the rape on Feb. 1, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

The woman told an investigator that she met Gotsis through a mutual friend and attended a party with him. After the party, she said, he took her to his home and raped her, according to police spokesman Officer S.R. Brown.

Gotsis turned himself in Wednesday at the jail, according to Brown.

Gotsis, 25, is a native of Melbourne, Australia, who spent more time playing Australian Rules football growing up, but quickly adapted to the American game, playing as a true freshman for Georgia Tech. He was selected in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Broncos. He has totaled 33 tackles and two sacks for the team since then.

The Broncos released a statement on Monday.

"We were recently informed of an investigation into an alleged incident involving Adam Gotsis that occurred in 2013 when he was in college," the statement reads. "Our organization was aware of his arrest on March 7, and it is our understanding that no determination has been made at this time as to whether any charges will be filed.

"The Broncos take an accusation of this nature very seriously and will continue to closely monitor the legal proceedings. This issue was promptly reported to the NFL as soon as we learned of it, and we will remain in communication with the league office regarding this matter."
