A Pickup Basketball Player Committed A Foul. Then This Happened.

"We thought he was joking til we saw buddy at the front desk on the phone really calling the police," one Twitter user said.

STERLING, VA — When a basketball player in a Sterling gym thought he was fouled too hard during a pickup game, he did something that should be considered a technical foul, out-of-bounds, slam-dunk ridiculous or whatever else critical you want to call it: he called cops.

A spokesman for the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office confirmed to Patch that a deputy was called to the gym Monday night. A manager at the LA Fitness in Dulles Town Center confirmed the incident happened on their courts.

Twitter user TrapMoneyBenny posted a photo of the ordeal around 8:40 p.m. Monday and said the man in the black shirt standing beside the officer had called authorities over getting "fouled hard."

"Today for the first time in my life...I experienced someone call the police because they got fouled hard in basketball," the tweet said.

"Dude falls down from what appears to be a 'hard screen,' TrapMoneyBenny tweeted. "Gets up tells everyone he calling the police."

The harsh reaction left everyone confused, he added. The next thing everyone knows, the aggrieved player — who has not been identified — goes to the front desk and calls authorities.

"We thought he was joking til we saw buddy at the front desk on the phone really calling the police," TrapMoneyBenny said.

Sure enough, an officer shows up.

"Cop come looks at everyone like 'why am I here' talks to them both for like 5 minutes and goes on his merry way," wrote TrapMoneyBenny.

A spokesman for the sheriff's office confirmed a deputy was sent to the scene, but noted a report was never filed.

"They were called out to the location. I'm not sure which gym it was regarding someone claiming they were fouled hard or something of that nature," the spokesman said.

An incident report obtained by Patch noted that the men admitted they "fouled each other."

"Management gave them one more chance to keep the game civil," the document said. "If not they will both be removed from the gym for the day."

A manager at the gym said they had no comment other than to confirm it had an "incident" with one of its members.

Although the manager didn't have exact details, he confirmed the men were playing basketball.

"He felt the need to call the police department, and so he did," the manager said.

Twitter reacted swiftly to the account, noting this is only the latest instance of authorities being called on black people over seemingly innocuous incidents. Some tried to label the man who called authorities #PickupPeter or #BasketballBradford in the same vein as #BBQBecky.
