Sound Shore Medical Center Orthopedists’ Achilles Research Published
Achilles tendon repair research by Sound Shore's Chief of Foot & Ankle Surgery, James McWilliam, MD and Chief of Sports Medicine Yasmin Dhar, MD published in American Journal of Sports Medicine.
James McWilliam, MD and Chief of Sports Medicine Yasmin Dhar, MD, both of Sound Shore Medical Center (SSMC) have published their achilles tendon repair research in American Journal of Sports Medicine.
The research, entitled “Biomechanical Properties of Double- and Single-Row Suture Anchor Repair for Surgical Treatment of Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy" stems from a technique developed by Dr. McWilliam for achilles tendon repair. Dr. McWilliam, Chief of Foot & Ankle at SSMC, according to the statement, worked closely with Dr. Dhar in testing to show that early weight bearing improves outcomes utilizing double suture reattachment.
Working with the biomechanical lab of the UConn's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Farmington, a controlled study was conducted, according to the release, and surgeons validated the benefits of the tendon repair technique.
Both competitive and recreational athletes can experience chronic, often disabling pain where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel bone. The pain can involve bone spurs, bursa inflammation and hardening of soft tissue. The doctor's Achilles research, according to the statement, has far-reaching application for not only the professional and recreational athlete, but for the general public.
Located in New Rochelle, Sound Shore Medical Center, founded in 1892, is the largest teaching hospital in Westchester County.
