NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Layoffs have begun again at the College of New Rochelle ahead of its planned closure after the summer semester. More than 20 staff members, but no faculty, were laid off Wednesday.

This latest round of personnel cuts was intended to ensure the college has funds with which to operate through the upcoming summer semester, the Journal News said.

In March, Mercy College and the College of New Rochelle reached an agreement to give CNR students a "seamless transition" to continue their education.

CNR found itself in a difficult financial situation in October 2016, when about $20 million in payroll taxes was discovered to have not been paid for eight quarters, beginning in 2014.

Then-President Judith Huntington resigned, and "unmet financial obligations" were found and presented to the trustees.
