In her award-winning book Those About Him Remained Silent: The Battle Over W.E. B. Du Bois, Dr. Amy Bass explores the collision of racism, patriotism, and global politics that emerged around NAACP founder W.E.B. Du Bois after his death in 1963. Author, civil rights activist, historian, and pan-Africanist, Du Bois was born in Great Barrington, a small town in Massachusetts that embraced him as a young, brilliant, student in the late 19th century, and then protested when a group proposed a memorial park in his name in the late 1960s. Bass will discuss how the debates over the legacy of Du Bois are increasingly relevant in contemporary American politics. Books will be available for purchase.
