Weather Update: Dangerous Wind Chills Throughout Westchester County

Throughout most of the Hudson Valley the snow amounts were not too bad Saturday.

When you think blizzard, you think snow measured in feet and that’s not what happened here, but to their credit the meteorologist got this one largely correct.

They always predicted today’s strong winds and sub-zero wind chill readings would be the real story here and not the snow accumulation. All told the meteorologists predicted 3-6 inches of total snow accumulation from this storm, but throughout most of the Hudson Valley the snow amounts were on the lower end.

“Our Valentine’s Day storm spared the Hudson Valley in terms of snowfall totals,” writes HudsonValleyWeather.com “Forecasted amounts of 2 to 6 inches… became actual amounts of generally 2 to 3 inches.”

For the rest of Sunday into Monday, the National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the Hudson Valley until 6 p.m. Sunday, with gusts approaching 50 miles per hour.

A Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect from 6 p.m. until 9 a.m. Monday. Low temperatures could reach 15-below to 25-below in the region. “Hazardous wind chills could cause frost bite and possibly hypothermia if exposed to for more than a brief period of time,” writes the NWS.

HudsonValleyWeather.com writes that parts of the region could experience even colder wind chill temps. “Now our attention turns to some of the coldest wind chills our area has seen in a long time. Wind Chill Warnings are in effect for the entire area, for wind chills ranging from -25° to -35°.”

HVW adds:

Bottom line… it’s going to be brutal. These conditions go beyond uncomfortable… they are dangerous. Use appropriate caution, check on elderly, bring the pets in… by this point in the winter, you know the drill. These winds will absolutely howl out of the northwest on Sunday, and in addition to the dangerous chill… we’ll also have a threat of downed trees and power lines due to gusts near 50mph at times. Also… that powerful wind, will blow all the snow that fell on Saturday… all over the place again. That means reduced visibilities and potentially snow covered roadways once again.
