Winning Football Coach Out After 28 Years In New Rochelle Schools

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — It's been a month since New Rochelle High School football Coach Lou DiRienzo was suddenly removed and reassigned by new schools Superintendent Laura Feijóo. Now he has resigned his teaching and coaching positions.

A brief joint statement said:

After 28 years of service to the New Rochelle City School District, its students and student athletes, Coach Louis DiRienzo has decided to resign from his position effective December 31, 2019. The Board thanks Coach DiRienzo for his years of dedicated service to the community and wishes him well in all of his future endeavors.

Coach DiRienzo stated:

After much thought, I have decided to resign from my positions as head football coach and teacher at New Rochelle High School. I am proud of my students' and teams' accomplishments on and off the football field these past 28 years. I will always be rooting for the Huguenots and the New Rochelle community. I thank the community for its support over the years.

DiRienzo has worked in the district for three decades. He was inducted into the Westchester Sports Hall of Fame earlier this year.

However, he could not coach the Huguenots football team at its fifth Class AA state championship game this season. The Huguenots won. His resignation is effective at the end of the year.

District officials have refused to talk about the case.

The Journal News reported family and friends said he helped a relative enrolled at the school leave campus in an emotional situation. TJN also reported that Yonkers police had received an allegation of improper conduct with a student back in the 1980s.
