📰 News we're reading

1. Niagara County confirms case of bat rabies, infected puppy euthanized (btpm.org) — Niagara County health officials have confirmed a rabid bat in North Tonawanda after a puppy was exposed and had to be euthanized, with one resident referred for treatment. Authorities are urging residents to vaccinate pets, avoid contact with wild animals, and call the county health department with any concerns about possible rabies exposure.

2. Sen. Ortt introduces new legislation to change environmental law (nystateofpolitics.com) — State Sen. Rob Ortt is pushing legislation to add radiological contamination to New York’s Superfund law after radioactive pollution was found at more than 100 Niagara County homes. The change would give DEC more tools and funding options to clean up affected properties and provide homeowners with official documentation that their homes are safe as ongoing assessments continue in Niagara and Erie counties.

3. DEC & EPA radiological assessment update for Aug. 5 (wnypapers.com) — State and federal teams are actively screening Niagara County properties for radiological contamination, with most homes so far needing no further action. Crews have already visited more than 1,200 properties, and residents can call a dedicated hotline for questions. Another drop‑in session is set for Monday, Aug. 10, at the Town of Niagara community center for anyone seeking in‑person updates.

4. NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation Awards $4 Million in Grants to Municipalities to Transition to Electric Vehicles (longisland.com) — New York State has awarded the Town of Niagara $167,000 to install a public fast electric vehicle charger, part of a broader $4 million push to expand EV fleets and charging statewide. Local drivers can expect better access to fast charging as these grants roll out, supporting cleaner transportation options in and around Niagara.
