18 Dogs Rescued From Shelter Island Home: Police

After executing a search warrant, police and animal rescue organizations seized 18 dogs from the Shelter Island house, authorities say.

SHELTER ISLAND, NY — A total of 18 dogs were seized from a home on Shelter Island Thursday, police said.

At 11 a.m. Shelter Island Police, along with town animal control officers and the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals executed a court-ordered search warrant at a house on Ferry Road; 18 dogs were seized under town code and New York State Agriculture and Markets Law violations, police said.

The Shelter Island town building inspector deemed the building unsafe for entry and put up a placard saying the home should not be occupied, police said.

The dogs were taken to three shelters on Long Island for evaluation and treatment, police said.

The investigation is ongoing and other code violations are expected, police said.
