Guys Who Garden---Enjoying the Fruits of their Labor
Veggie Gardens Appeal to the Practical-Minded
After a week of my blogging about Guys Who Garden in honor of Father’s Day, my husband added his two-cents. “What’s the most common thing you hear from guys who show up at your book signings?” he reminded me.
Wow, how could I have forgotten that! The most frequently heard male response on the subject of green things growing is simple: “If I can’t eat it, I don’t grow it.”
Just a couple of days ago, I got that response from a fan who showed up at the table where I was signing books---with a geranium in one hand for his wife (hot pink) and my latest novel for me to sign in the other. Though my fiction is about perennial gardening and gardeners, I love to grow veggies myself. Unfortunately, what with touring and all, that isn’t always practical. That thought kept humming away in the back of my head when I just stocked up on some flats of annuals for my planters.
I just couldn’t resist—there sat a six-pack of peppers. They were the edible, not ornamental kind. And right there, I just had to have ‘em. They’re tall with these great, tiny white flowers. And every time I see them peering out from among the annuals, I’ll think of my hubby—the guy who helps me grow perennials and who truly believes when planning a day’s food groups that a dusting of parsley on a plate constitutes a “veggie course”.
