Blogger: Greenport Flowers Have Last Roses of the Season

A whitewashed fence becomes the backdrop for late-fall beauty

I’ve passed it for weeks—this gorgeous rose-covered fence on Route 25 in Greenport. I vowed to stop. Finally this weekend I did, camera in hand. I was richly rewarded for the detour. Along the sidewalk for all to experience, the last roses of the summer are blooming their hearts out. It is the stuff of poetry and pop songs and memories of childhood romps in the leaves. Up close the rose leaves are pitted with evidence that marauding bugs, too, have noticed the largesse. Culinary pickings will soon be slimmer. Still, the petals themselves had lost none of their velvet loveliness. Crimson and wine, pink and corals of every description and a few hints of glacial white stood out against the weathered graining of the fence. Some things in life call out to us to stop and enjoy and give thanks for beauty along our path. Some of the best things are truly free for the sharing. And these golden days are not going to last forever.
