Packing My Knapsack For NoFo Rock and Folk Fest 2011!
Hey there North Fork Mamas and Papas, If you're going to San Francisco or better yet, the NOFO Rock and Fock Fest in Cutchogue this weekend ...."be sure to wear flowers in your hair."

In 1979, I attended the Woodstock 10th Year Reunion concert which was held at the defunct Parr Meadows racetrack property on William Floyd Parkway near the LIE. My uncle's brother, John Morris, was one of the original promoters of the Woodstock Festival as well as the Reunion Concert. I asked him for a few tickets to the Reunion Concert and magic, 10 tickets arrived in the mail!
I lived around the corner from the concert site in Bellport so it was a "no brainer" for my friends and I to hop into my boyfriend's old station wagon and head over on the day of the event with, as I recall, only a cooler filled with beer provided my "legal" friends in the group.
As we drove northward from the Montauk Highway to the concert site, kids were camped out on the grassy median and the sides of the road. This was no Woodstock Festival though. There was no traffic jams, no confusion or chaos created by the onslaught of concertgoers, though lots of activities on site were afoot, reminiscent of the original Woodstock.

At the time, my friends and I were ensconced in Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Lynard Skynard, Yes, The Who and ELP (Emerson Lake and Palmer to my newbie readers). But I also loved to dance for hours with my girlfriends to the rhythm of Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor and other disco greats at the time. I even succumbed, occasionally, to the Bee Gees and had placed second in a couples' school dance contest the very year that the Sugarhill Gang "Rapper's Delight" came out.
Remember "they" all said "rap would not last"?

The Woodstock Reunion Concert opened my 16-year-old ears wide open to the music of the 60's.
I became a fan of Canned Heat, Richie Havens, John Sebastian and other artists performing that day.
As I pack my knapsack ("it's a 'backpack' Mom! Knapsacks are from the 'old days'"!) ") and get ready to head over toin Cutchogue, I look forward to reliving many memories of the "old days" and find the fodder of "new days" as well.
See you there...will you be the one with flowers in your hair?
