Elderly Female Bicyclist Airlifted After Being Hit by A Truck in Greenport: Police

The accident took place Wednesday afternoon, police said.

GREENPORT, NY — An elderly woman was airlifted after being struck by a truck while riding her bike at the intersection of North Road and Moores Lane on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley said at 12:17 p.m., Rosemary Getwillig, 84, of Greenport, who was bicycling east on North Road, ran into the side of a a truck driven by Aaron Mcginness, 25, of Greenport, as he was turning from North Road onto Moores Lane.

She was treated at the scene by Greenport rescue, then airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital, police said. She suffered a lacertaion on her hand and was experiencing difficulty breathing, police said.

"Her injuries were not serious," Flatley said.

It was the second time a female bicyclist was hit in Greenport in recent weeks; in June, Lynn Webb was struckby a police car driven by Police Officer Frank Rogers, according to Flatley.

According to a release by Southold Town Police, the incident took place on New York State Route 25 and Sound Road when Webb, 65, was riding her bicycle eastbound on the south shoulder of Route 25 and attempted to cross the roadway heading north at the intersection of Sound Road, near the Shady Lady.
Webb, police said, failed to yield for an oncoming police department vehicle on routine patrol.

Flatley said that Webb had sustained "non-life-threatening injuries."
