Gas Leak Prompts Resident Evacuations: Cops

A natural gas line ruptured and leaked, police say.

MATTITUCK, NY — A gas leak led to the evacuation of some residences in Mattituck Thursday, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place at 10:41 a.m. at Wickham Avenue and Marys Road when the Southold Town highway department was repairing a storm drain and struck a natural gas line, causing it to rupture and leak.

Mattituck Fire Department responded and evacuated nearby residences; National Grid arrived at the scene and shut down the line causing the leak, police said.

National Grid remained on scene to complete the necessary repairs to the ruptured line, and the evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes, police said.
