GREENPORT, NY — In the years before the ice rink opened in Greenport, village board members envisioned a place that would draw families and visitors to downtown during the off season, creating a magical place where memories could be made — and also, where skaters might stop at local businesses for a hot cocoa or a meal during the winter months.

That vision was in full fruition Sunday, at a free skate day offered by the Friends of Mitchell Park at the Greenport ice rink on Front Street. Kids up to age 17 skated free; free rental skates were available, as well.

The downtown streets echoed with music and laughter as the sun glistened off the ice.
