Greenport Man Rescued After Becoming Stuck in Mud, Deep Water, Suffering From Hypothermia: Police

The man had been trying to take a shortcut home in Greenport near Silver Lake but was barely conscious when rescued, police said.

NORTH FORK, NY - A Greenport man who tried to take a shortcut home got more than he bargained for when he got stuck in the mud and deep, cold water, needing rescue, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place on Friday at 3:12 a.m. when the man tried to take a shortcut to his Sixth Street home in Greenport.

The man attempted to cut through a marshy area north of Silver Lake in Greenport from Webb Street, police said, and soon became stuck in the mud and water about five feet deep.

The man was able to call 911 and a cellphone ping was able to give responders his general location, police said.

A police officer, wearing waders, was able to locate the man in a dense reedy area, barely conscious, police said.

The area was inaccessible without cold water exposure gear and a boat, police said; the officer was able to keep the man above water until East Marion Fire Department personnel were able to reach him in exposure suits and a rescue platform.

He was extracted from the water and transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of hypothermia, police said.

Greenport, East Marion, and Southold Fire Departments all responded and assisted in the operation, police said.
