Greenport RHUMB LINE RESTAURANT is discussed here
~ 'Cause It It Now ANDY'S - AND ANDY'S is Marvelous ~ Cheers!

BY DAN McCARTHY
ALL RIGHT – {OR HALF-LEFT IN POLITICS!} I don’t have to go “above the bar” because my nickname is Danny McCarthy. I can’t use that name as my Actors’ Equity name since there was a Danny McCarthy who starred on Broadway as The Bartender in The Iceman Cometh.
Now why do I mention a BAR? Because the former Greenport NY restaurant/bar RHUMB LINE has changed its ownership AND its name – and I definitely thought to share some thoughts, okay? Thanksalatee as usual!
Sunday, September 8 {2019!} I was with my Southold friend Bob Stanonis and we parked behind the former ARCADE parking store and headed to the former RHUMB LINE knowing that the establishment is now ANDY’S.
We were seated at the gorgeous window-section facing Front Street – The stools were so appropriate and ones we could “re-ceipt” on so easily! {We made sure to notice the new upholstery that would make for good “chair-raising times” for customers to “feel write at home!”}
And - Boy! was there “PLENTY OF ROOM FOR SOME SIGHTS!” We even recognized and said hello to a Southold pair we knew who then passed us. AND they made sure to mention how they were so looking forward to “checking-out ANDY’S” themselves since they just happened to spot us “write-in front by the windows” knowing that we appreciated being there ourselves and having let them know!
You see: The Sunday we attended ANDY’s was graced with such beautiful weather and in absolutely no way was it “going to Rain On Our Parade!” This pub has such a welcoming aura that it was clear that the time there would be so meaningful.
Being an archivist who LOVES to delve into going about and SPOTLIGHTING and FEATURING information for folks, I decided to “go write-on ahead” and compose this post about ANDY’S with ANDY’S own Andy Harbin’s A-OK.
NOW OF COURSE – Rhumb Line could be associated in definition to be like a track line on a ship and too – rhumb line is developed from circular motion that was found placed in an angle from that circular motion that is on the earth and it is associated with ship navigation.
Let’s take a look back at “Days in Our Past” re: RHUMB LINE, okay {?} {!}:
HERE’S “LUKE-ING” AT Ya! …
The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman dated August 22, 1974:
An OLD COVE YACHT CLUB race was held and “A {luke-sailing} Independent finished second and Robert Copas placed third in his modified sloop rhumb line {stet} {Yes! It was found typeset in lower case – BUT - if it is the NAME of a boat, it should have capital letters at the beginning of the name of the boat when listing the title - and the boat name/title should be typeset in italics! Here – The boat OWNED by Robert Copas was Rhumb Line!}
The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Mattituck Watchman dated January 30, 1975:
“ … In conjunction with the Pierce Yacht Basin All Sail Boat Show {that was scheduled for February 1, 2 and 8, 9, there was to be} ‘a special series of Frostbite races’ {that were} ‘organized under the auspices of the {newly-formed} Eastern Sailing Club.’ …
LIKE The Poseidon Adventure …
‘There’s Got To Be a Yawling After!’
‘HAVE I GOT A SLOOP FOR YOU!’ … ‘The boat show will have a full complement of sailing sloops and yawls open for boarding, 25 designs in all, from Pearson, Ericson, Catalina, and O’Day with additional exhibits of {marine-related} gear on display from {Preston’s}, Seatronics, Windward Sailing, Lewmar Winches, 208 Book and Reord Shop{,} and others. Rhumb Line Restaurant will be at the show serving hot and cold refreshments.’”
The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman dated February 6, 1975:
“The new ‘Eastern Sailing Club’ of Greenport, got their club under way with an organizational meeting on Sunday, {February} 2. Over 60 members attended the meeting at the Rhumb Line Restaurant in Greenport. Commodore pro-tem {Howard Sykes} welcomed everyone and turned the meeting over to Phillip Ofrias, Judge Advocate of the group, who in-turn outlined the by-laws and constitution to those present. … Officers that did include Commodore Howard Sykes, also included Ed Koother, Vice Commodore; Walter Blum, Rear Commodore; Charles Balas, Treasurer; Carol Boger, Recording Secretary; and Jeanne Taylor, Corresponding Secretary.”
WATCH FOR AN UPDATED POST BY ME ABOUT THE Eastern Sailing Club {!!!}
The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman dated February 6, 1975 shared about the “{c}old sailors who made for hot competition in closely fought races in all classes as threatening skies and snow flurries opened {for the two special weekend races} of {a} frostbite racing series at the {Pierce Yacht Basin in Greenport}. Aha! ANOTHER forthcoming POST: Pierce Yacht Basin in Greenport!
The story goes for that Pierce Yacht Basin-related article that “12 competitors ‘vied’ for the unique trophies ‘that would be’ ‘awarded for the winners of the series.’ …
… ‘Trophies {were} also awarded for {a} season-long series {that were} donated by the Pierce Yacht Basin and the Rhumb Line Restaurant. All boats 12 feet and under including Penguins and Optimist Prams {were} cordially invited to join the Sunday events. There {was no} measurement requirements or fees. Sailors {were to} notify the Race Committee at the Pierce Yacht Basin dock 15 minutes before {a} 1 p.m. starting signal. …
Winners for the Fall-Winter Series will be announced on Sunday along with winners of the {four-day} Regatta.’”
The East Hampton Star dated April 22, 1976:
“Ocean Racers Form ‘Station’
The newly-formed ‘Eastern Long Island Station’ of the Midget Ocean Racing Club, an international group, will meet Sunday, May 2, at the Rhumb Line Restaurant on Front Street in Greenport at 6 p.m.
Richard Carlson of Sag Harbor said that the Station would provide ‘the only opportunity for cruiser-racers of up to 30 feet to race in this area,’ and invited ‘all interested yachtsmen’ to attend the May {2nd} meeting.
Handicapping, Mr. Carlson said, would be done by ‘measurement rule, a handicap based on physical characteristics, not a performance handicap.
Weekend races in Gardiner’s Bay of three to five hours in duration would begin at the end of May, he said.’”
The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman dated October 28, 1976 included a photograph accompanied by a caption of the members of ~
“EASTERN LONG ISLAND DIVISION II RACING CLUB
met at Rhumb Line Restaurant October 23 to elect new officers. Pictured {were} left to right: Gene Gogarty; Bob Melrose, E.L.I. Yachting Association Chairman; Joan Carlson; Preston Sutphen; Sandy Luke. Elected commodore; Dick Carlson, elected measurer; Howard Gordon, Ted and Nancy Di Giacomo; Bob Copas, elected rear commodore, also owner of the restaurant{,} and Kevin Murphy. Also elected, but not present, were Lou Belvilaqua, vice commodore Carl Wolfteich, fleet captain and Howard Meinke, historian.”
IT’S SO SO DEFINITELY –
“ALL IN THE NAME!”
The East Hampton Star dated August 25, 1977 read that “Robert Copas {was} sailing his Rhumb Line, which {docked} in Greenport {and he won a} 30-feet class in 4:00:44.”
ROBERT COPAS happened to be the OWNER of RHUMB LINE Restaurant!
HERE’S SOME OF THE
HEART OF THE MATTER
RE: ANDY’S
ANDY’S that is located in the former RHUMB LINE location on Front Street in Greenport is co-owned by David and Josh Goldstein. The renowned “local bartender” is “none other than” Andy Harbin.
It truly seems that this local Greenport dad should truly know that he knows “HOW TO SUCCEED {WITH HIS OWN NEW} BUSINESS! – just by being himself. Let’s face it: Andy Harbin has been a Greenport NY Rhumb Line bartender for 32 years and now he’s got the place to call home and exchange it with the public in a new way by having “an open door policy!”
I’m telling you: Andy’s combining efforts of being on the floor, within the kitchen, and behind the bar, lets him make sure that this is a family-oriented establishment “write-in” the heart of Greenport. That was Andy Harbin’s dream & now he’s got it. He doesn’t have to counter his thoughts – merely just “pay it forward and realize this his ANDY’S is super to share! JUST WAIT my friends. I so appreciated being made aware that
Andy “write-fully” feels like I do – and I’m sure you do too – that folks sometimes are looking to “go towards the high end.”
Well: Here on the East End in Greenport, ANDY’S has already maintained its own high end in a sort of way.
This particular fella has actually helped to make this place shine because of his input and the staff is exceptional - the wide variety of selections of the tremendous homemade “eats,” {that are chemical-free!} - the “in-house” beverages of all sorts ~ and I’m not going to “wine” about the assortment! This place was absolutely amazing to partake-in for a luncheon and I honestly couldn’t refrain from “Reviewing The Situation!” – There were endless meaningful pleasurable experiences to be found at ANDY’S due to the wide and bountiful and quite reasonably-priced vast-welcoming-menu-items too!
My-oh-my! – The available TVs where you can actually channel your thoughts away as you re-seat yourself for write-on targets of viewing - and you can broadcast cheers from those in-house televised-available-on-the-screens’-sets while tuning-in.
YOU KNOW … I MUST – I MUST ADD A DEFINITE AND NOT SUCH
A NOT THAT FAR FROM A MISSING LINK CARRYING THE WEBSITE OF ANDY’S:
