Greenport Without Power For Almost An Hour Tuesday

The outage lasted for about 46 minutes in Greenport Tuesday, Mayor George Hubbard says.

GREENPORT, NY — The Village of Greenport was without power for almost an hour Tuesday afternoon, according to Village Mayor George Hubbard.

"The Village of Greenport experienced a power outage this afternoon, attributed to the failure of a PSEG cable. The Village worked with PSEG and power was restored within an hour. No further issues are anticipated as a result," a statement from Greenport Village Clerk Sylvia Pirillo said.

According to Hubbard, he got a call about the outage at 1:23 p.m.; the power was out for about 46 minutes and is entirely restored.

An issue near the Southold PSEG substation is believed to have caused the outage, he said. The outage, he added, affected "the entire village."

Elizabeth Flagler, media representative for PSEG, explained the outage: "PSEG Long Island was working to install a redundancy cable feed to Greenport. While they were excavating, the shovel made contact with the existing cable and caused a loss of feed to the village. The outage occurred at 1:22 p.m. and was restored approximately 47 minutes later."

She added, "Part of this project is the installation of automatic switching units. The project is still in progress. Once it is complete, these units will be radial, so if there is a cable fault the response time will be significantly shortened. We should be able to restore the outage without sending a serviceman out."
