Jonathan Robinson - a Genealogical connection
He was married in Southold in the 1700s to a Hannah Wells

BY DANNY McCARTHY:
Recently having been requested to “go about and Carry on! with genealogical research” I was able to assuredly and most certainly & definitely find some learning lessons for both myself and the patron who initially offered the request.
You see folks: There was an actual search for a Jonathan Robinson who was married to Hannah Wells in the 1700s. And the known year of marriage regarding that couple that was already known from the patron was 1776! And that the wedding ceremony took place in Southold Town. Actual background on those two was seeked – and that’s where the genealogical research is involved.
In doing my quest for the patron – I was able to learn that that particular Jonathan Robinson was a Reverend.
I’m met that patron named Marianne Duyan and her mom who live in California when they did visit me at the Southold Free Library Thursday, November 7, 2019 {!!!}
I so definitely thought that I’d compose this post about my genealogical research having benefited as an effort of helping and I’m looking forward to meeting Marianne, her mother, and reacquainting with Tiger Gardiner!
In going online to Suffolk Historic Newspapers website I entered keywords Jonathan Robinson – and I was able to locate just 20 matches/entries of that name. Now, again, Suffolk Historic Newspapers website ALWAYS “generates” {“so-to-speak”} variations of names that could be similar to the one entered as the one{s} entered within the Search bar atop that website. AND YES – I did locate other Jonathan Robinson names and they were NOT regarding REVEREND JONATHAN ROBINSON! I ended-up locating just a few that “related” {again~ “so to speak!} to this Reverend Jonathan Robinson. I’ll share some of the entries I came across.
PERHAPS IT IS ALL RIGHT {& NOT HALF-LEFT LIKE IN POLITICS!} TO SAY ~
“LET’S KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY …”
As I came across an April 13, 1901 South Side Signal obituary:
“BABYLON friends of Mrs. Lawrence R. Wood, of Bridgeport, Ct., will sympathize with her in the death of her mother, Mrs. Jeannette Wines, who passed away at Mrs. Wood’s home on Wednesday, April 8, aged 79. Mrs. Wines was a descendant of the Rev. Jonathan Robinson, a Presbyterian clergyman who was {well-known} in Brookhaven town, particularly in the Moriches section, in the early part of the last century and who died about 1847. Besides Mrs. Wood, another daughter, Mrs. Robert Snowden, of Wisconsin, survives. Another child was the late J E Wines, the noted boat builder of Center Moriches. The remains were brought for interment to East Quogue, where many relatives of the deceased reside, and the funeral was held there last Friday afternoon.”
The Watchman dated September 1, 1938 – There is a front-page article titled Family Reunions Are In Order. Now you just know what I’m going to do folks, “write” {?} YES! I’m placing that dated clipping “write below”:

The County review dated February 16, 1950:
“MANORVILLE {column that was included in that issue}
… Restoration has now been started on the old Joseph Raynor home, recently known as ‘Sunny Corners.’ The present owners, Mr and Mrs L Lagocus of Hempstead plan to make this their permanent home. The birth of Joseph Raynor II is recorded as June 7, 1853. His father lived in the house where Andrew Waski now lives on the farm of O H C Becken. It was in this house where the Brookfield Partition was written. Joseph Jr married the oldest daughter of Rev Jonathan Robinson, Phebe {could “also be generically typeset Phoebe}, when she was 14 years old, they had 14 children and have descendants all over Long Island and {also in} other states. This was also the summer home of John Dunsmure, who was a {well-known} and successful singer …”
The Long Island Advance dated September 20, 1962:
Thomas R. Bayles had an article entered in that edition:
“Landmark of Faith Meets Today’s Needs
MANORVILLE - - A landmark in Brookhaven Town that goes back 150 years is the Brookfield Presbyterian Church in Manorville, which was organized in April, 1796 by the Long Island Presbytery through the efforts of Jonathan Robinson, who had conducted services for several years before that time in his home.
His work was recognized by the Presbytery, and in October 1788, according to Prime’s history, ‘they pressed their approbation to Mr. Robinson as a leader of the devotions of that retired and isolated community.’
On the 26th of November 1807, the Presbytery met at the ‘Brookfield Meeting House,’ which was the home of Mr. Robinson, and ordained him to the work as pastor of the Brookfield church, which he continued until his death in 1824.
The present church building was erected in 1838 during the ministry of the Rev. Thomas Owen, and the first Sunday School was organized in 1840 with Capt. Seth Raynor as its first superintendent. A belfry and bell were added to the church about 1875. …” {The article continues but the information I just shared above that was taken from that Thomas R. Bayles article is ALL that is found where Reverend Jonathan Robinson-related information is entered.}
There was a very blurry photo of the church included with this article but the caption is worthy of note:
“LINK WITH PAST, and future, in Manorville is 150-yer-old Brookfield Presbyterian Church. Geared to modern needs, and served by energetic people, the church is a vital hub of community activity.”
THE FIRST BELOW LINK EXCHANGED SAYS THAT THE GRAVE WAS MOVED TO RIVERHEAD AND I'VE PLACED THE RIVERHEAD-LOCATED FINDAGRAVE.COM LINK BELOW, OKAY? Manoville is part of Riverhead, NY -{!}-:
