According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place at 12:31 p.m., when a call came in about a person in distress in the water, police said. Blake Sommi, 21, of Darien, CT was kite surfing when he went into the water, leaving him floating in the channel between the 6th Street beach in Greenport and Sunset Beach on Shelter Island, police said.

Harry Donovan, a 16-year old Greenport Village lifeguard working at the 6th Street Beach, became aware of the situation and paddled his rescue board out to Sommi, who was about a quarter mile offshore, police said.
